Brooklyn Rider

sf-brooklynrider150BROOKLYN RIDER (String Quartet), a genre-defying string quartet, illuminates music in fresh ways through creative programming and exciting collaborations. Equally devoted to existing quartet literature and the creation of new works, they have collaborated with such composers as Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, and Dimitry Yanov-Yanovsky, and with artists including Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, Japanese shakuhachi player Kojiro Umezaki, Irish fiddle player Martin Hayes, and Persian kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor. The quartet has been in residency at Williams College, Dartmouth College, Texas A&M University, and Denison University. As individual members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, they have recorded three albums and performed throughout the world, reaching audiences through educational initiatives, concerts, and broadcasts. Brooklyn Rider’s name is inspired by the cross-disciplinary vision of Der Blau Reiter (The Blue Rider), a pre-World War I Munich-based artistic collective, and by the exploding array of cultures and artistic energy found in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, a place they also call home.
